Connected Car: All Teslas will be self-driving, only they won’t!

People will probably always enjoy taking the wheel, but in the near future they only will have to do this if they really want to. Tesla just announced they will equip all of its new vehicles with connected car technology that enables fully autonomous driving. They just won’t turn it on.
In a blog post, Tesla enthused about their new capability to drive themselves, claiming they will be “substantially safer than a human driver”. However, the hardware and software will not be fully activated, but only used to gather further data in order to “further calibrate the system using millions of miles of real-world driving to ensure significant improvements to safety and convenience.” When this will happen remains open.

All Tesla cars will come equipped with eight surround cameras providing 360 degree visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range. Twelve ultrasonic sensors will complement this vision and will be able to detect hard and soft objects in close range to the vehicle. A forward-facing radar will provide data on a redundant wavelength, thus being able to see through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead. The whole system will be controlled by a computer that Tesla says has 40 times the computing power of the previous generation. Tesla promises to send updates and new features to the cars via their „over the air“-System.
