Smart Home Amazon Echo: Criminal Justice

Amazon’s Echo is a home device that uses a a cloud-service to assist its owner in playing music, for home automatization and for answering all kinds of questions through it’s voice assistant “Alexa” – basically. But smart home could also help solve murders.

According to TechCrunch, police in Arkansas now are hoping to get important clues on a case of murder from the device. Authorities in Bentonville issued a warrant for Amazon to hand over any audio or records from an Echo that was installed in a house where a murder took place. Usually, the Echo is activated by certain words, but the IoT gadget is often alerted to listen by accident. Amazon declined to give police any of the information that the Echo logged on its servers, but it did hand over the owners account details and purchases.

The case is already raising fresh fears of privacy invasion. An Amazon spokesperson said the company will put up a fight:

“Amazon will not release customer information without a valid and binding legal demand properly served on us. Amazon objects to overbroad or otherwise inappropriate demands as a matter of course.”
