Private 5G Network: Rakuten Signs RCP Deal With Ligado

Japanese operator Rakuten Mobile has reached an agreement with U.S.-based Ligado Networks to help it design a private 5G network that uses Rakuten’s customizable platform. The two companies plan to define a strategy that leverages Rakuten’s ecosystem to advance a jointly developed 5G mobile private network solution and accelerate overall L-band commercial readiness among network hardware and software providers.

Rakuten, which is battling to become the fourth major mobile player in Japan with its virtualized 4G/5G network, is aiming to package and productize the containerized software it has used in its Japanese network and provide it as a service to other operators around the world.

We went through three years of headaches, trying to be a systems integrator, pulling in the right partners… we have taken three years of experience and knowledge and packaged it into the RCP,

noted Rakuten Mobile CTO Tareq Amin during a recent media briefing.

The FCC last April unanimously approved Ligado’s application to deploy a low-power terrestrial nationwide network using portions of its lower mid-band spectrum to support 5G and IoT. But there’s been controversy around Ligado’s plan, including opposition from the aviation industry, the U.S. Department of Defense, and Department of Transportation with concerns about interface with federal use of GPS. Before leaving his post as FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai in January denied (PDF) a request by the NTIA to stay Ligado’s authorization.

5G mobile private networks are becoming critical infrastructure for many industries,

added Doug Smith, President and CEO at Ligado Networks.

Combining our know-how and licensed L-Band spectrum in the U.S. with RCP, we will create a novel blueprint for delivering new efficiencies to U.S. companies looking to deploy powerful mobile private networks that are highly secure and ultra-reliable.
