New Ericsson Mobility Report

The Ericsson Mobility Report is released twice each year and provides projections and analyses of the latest trends in the mobile industry, including subscription, mobile data traffic and population coverage.

Its forecasts are based on past and current data, validated with network measurements. The current report focuses highly on 5G, which grows at high speed as networks are built out across the world. In South Korea around 3 million subscribers recorded for 5G in just a few months. Globally, Ericsson estimates 5G subscriptions for the end of 2019 to reach 13 million.
The report claims, that what has happened in 2019 doesn’t determine the success of 5G but rather indicates what is to come. As 5G specifications were accelerated in 3GPP, device and infrastructure vendors took on the challenge to deliver 5G earlier than expected. 5G now has broad support from almost all device makers, and a strong ecosystem.
By the end of 2025, Ericsson expects 5G to have 2.6 billion subscriptions covering up to 65 percent of the world’s population and generating 45 percent of the world’s total mobile data traffic. This makes it the fastest developing mobile communication technology to have ever been rolled out on a global scale.
Some figures from the report:

  • total number of mobile subscriptions was around 8 billion in Q3 2019
  • 61 million subscriptions added during the quarter
  • Mobile broadband subscriptions make up 77 percent of all mobile subscriptions
  • Mobile data traffic grew 68 percent between Q3 2018 and Q3 2019
  • NB-IoT and Cat-M technologies are projected to account for more than 50 percent of cellular IoT connections in 2025
