Microsoft Acquires CyberX to Accelerate and Secure Customers’ IoT Deployments

One of the biggest hurdles for IoT-customers is securing their remote devices (IoT deployments) – both for new digitization initiatives as well as for legacy Operational Technology and industrial control system environments. In 2018, Microsoft announced a $5 billion investment in IoT to further their commitment to build a trusted, easy-to-use platform.
Microsoft currently provides multi-layer IoT security and IoT security monitoring in Azure. And while securely configuring IoT devices is already possible, Microsoft aims to simplify IoT and make securing IoT devices easier. Now they are trying to give customers visibility into what IoT devices are already connected to their networks. And to manage the security on existing IoT devices that have so far been difficult due to many custom protocols.

More security for IoT deployments

To accelerate these steps, Microsoft now acquires CyberX. CyberX is meant to complement the existing Azure IoT security capabilities and extends to existing devices including those used in iIoT, Operational Technology and infrastructure scenarios. CyberX allows customers to discover their existing IoT assets, and both manage and improve the security posture of those devices. They may also see a digital map of thousands of devices across a factory floor or within a building and gather information about their asset profile and vulnerabilities. Gaining this visibility is not only critical for understanding where security risks may exist and then mitigating those risks, but it is also a fundamental step to securely enable smart manufacturing, smart grid and other digitization use cases across production facilities and the supply chain.
Microsoft plans to deliver more value to customers as CyberX is further integrated with their portfolio of IoT security offerings in threat protection. More information about CyberX can be found in the CyberX listing in the Azure Marketplace, a demo can be requested.
