Merger: Orange Disputs Claims of Telekom Takeover Plan

In late November, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported senior management at Deutsche Telekom were exploring the possibility of a merger deal with Orange.

According to their sources, the newspaper said, Telekom CEO Timotheus Hoettges, has authorized low-level talks with Orange to explore the possibility of a merger or takeover. The rumor was immediately denied by an Orange representative in an interview with Mobile World Live.

In fact, both telco giants have a history of partnering on initiatives and there had been meetings between senior executives earlier in the year. Previously the companies were joint owners of UK operator EE. Since 2011, both have been partners in a purchasing joint-venture called BUYIN. Orange, the former France Télécom, ist the largest network operator in France, with a market capitalization of some €40 billion. France Télécom and Deutsche Telekom jointly owned a network in the UK named EE, which they sold to BT (British Telecom) in 2015.
