IoT networks: Vodafone launches new NB-IoT net

To enable communication between all kinds of devices, new networks will be necessary. Vodafone says it will be the first to start one in Europe in the near future. The company will launch live commercial NB IoT networks starting in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain in the first three months of 2017. The Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) network layer will allow millions of everyday objects to be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT).

The rollout will involve just a simple software upgrade to existing 4G base stations, so nationwide coverage will be delivered almost immediately. Vodafone is hoping to convert its entire global network by 2020. A spokesperson said that NB-IoT will act as catalyst for connecting things in ways that would not have been possible before using existing technologies.
Vodafone’s director of Internet of Things Ivo Rook:

“The questions of battery life and deep in-building penetration have now been answered by NB-IoT. The low cost of the modules means we can expect a new wave of connected devices and soaring market demand. Vodafone’s world leading expertise and experience in IoT will prove invaluable in shaping this exciting market.”
