5G mobile network: Vodafon-Launch 2019

Vodafone says its next-gen 5G mobile network will launch in seven UK cities on 3 July 2019, namely Glasgow, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol.

A dozen additional areas, Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton, will be hooked up later this year. Some 5G phones will need a software update to get 5G once the network is live, the provider says. Customers using a 5G compatible phone in an area that doesn’t have 5G coverage, your phone will automatically swap to 4G, 3G or 2G – depending on the signal that’s available.
Nick Jeffery, CEO of Vodafone, told computerweekly.com, that his company has already upgraded its masts to be able to take 5G without disruption.

We led the way in setting 5G standards to ensure phones and networks work well together

he said, adding:

We were the first UK company to test 5G over our all-fibre core fixed and mobile network. It means UK businesses can lead the world in adopting 5G to boost productivity and attract investment. It means consumers can get the fastest mobile speeds ever, and it means that our public sector will be able to adopt new services to improve healthcare, social services and housing.

As well as bringing 5G connectivity to UK cities, Vodafone confirmed it will also be offering 5G roaming services in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain over the summer.
